My Thursday Dhamma Class and our class discussion is on the Mula Sutta and is the third of three talks on the meaning of Becoming.
“Monks, if those of other sects ask you ‘In what are all phenomena rooted, how do they come into play, what is their origination, how are they established, what is their foundation, what is their governing principle, what is their defining state, what is their heartwood, where do they gain footing, and what is their cessation?’ On being asked this you should reply…"

My Saturday Dhamma Talk and our Sangha discussion is on the Nagara Sutta. Here the newly awakened Siddartha describes in remarkable and profound detail his awakening.
“Friends, before my awakening, when I was only an unawakened Bodhisatta, (Sanskrit: Bodhisattva) I came to the realization of the difficulties of the world. The world is born, it ages, it dies, it falls away and returns, but there is no understanding of ending the stress and suffering of aging and death. When will the world understand the cessation of the stress and suffering from aging and death…”

My Tuesday Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion is the second of three talks on meaning of becoming.
Even during the Buddha’s time, there was confusion regarding the meaning of becoming. In the Bhava Sutta, Ananda, the Buddha’s cousin and chief attendant asks for clarity:
“In this way karma is the field, consciousness the seed, and craving the moisture. The consciousness of human beings rooted in ignorance and bound by craving is established in wrong view. Established in wrong view, (ignorance) renewed becoming is produced…"

Our Thursday December 17 class begins our Truth Of Happiness Dhamma Study. Please join us via Zoom and support our newest sangha members. Live-Stream Information.
Our Tuesday/Saturday class Truth Of Happiness Dhamma Study begins January 12, 2021
My Saturday Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion is the second of three talks on the key theme of the Buddha’s Dhamma: Understanding Dukkha and resulting release from all fabricated views of human life.
Dukkha is one aspect of Anicca, Anatta, and Dukkha – the Three Marks Of Human Existence. The purpose of the Buddha’s Dhamma is to understand and abandon the clinging of views ignorant of Four Noble Truths onto impermanent and impersonal phenomena. It is the role of true vipassana, true introspective insight into these Three Marks that is developed through the Eightfold Path.
Saturday’s talk is on The Maha-Dukkhandha Sutta. In this sutta, the Buddha teaches the distraction and drawback of Five Clinging Aggregates.
“This drawback of sensuality, this mass of stress and suffering that is visible here and now has sensuality as it source and its establishment. Simply put, the drawback is sensuality…"
I look forward to sharing the Buddha's Dhamma with you at our center in Frenchtown or online via Zoom.

My Saturday Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion continue our structured study of the Dhammapada with this class chapter on the Piyavagga. The Piyavagga teaches the hurtful results of unskillful desire rooted in ignorance of Four Noble Truths and the liberation from stress and suffering developed through the skillful desire or true affection or “holding dear” the Buddha’s Dhamma.
"Entangled with what is not their task, ignoring what is their task, having dismissed the goal of understanding to grasp after what is desired, the fool envies the wise who followed the Dhamma…"

My Tuesday Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion continue our structured study of the Dhammapada with this class chapter on the Sukhavagga.
Sukkha is a state of profound contentment. The Buddha taught that Dukkha, the state of ongoing confusion, deluded thinking, and ongoing disappointing and unsatisfying experiences is rooted in ignorance of Four Noble Truths. In this chapter the Buddha compares the profound contentment established through developing the Eightfold Path to those whose minds are ignorant of Four Noble Truths and the suffering that follows.
As with the Buddha’s entire Dhamma, this chapter’s relevance to current events is remarkable:
"The wise live content within a hostile world. Within a hostile world, the wise remain free of hatred…"
