My Tuesday Dhamma talks, and our Sangha discussion will be on the first of three talks on the meaning of “Taking Refuge.”
The teaching known as the “Jewel Discourse” or the “Ratana Sutta” was given in the city of Vesali at a time of widespread famine and spreading disease. There were many dead bodies as the conditions overwhelmed the ability to properly dispose of bodies. The local citizens sought out the Buddha’s help, who was nearby in Rajagaha…

Anapanasati Sutta, An Example of Authentic Dhamma Practice Part 5
My Saturday Dhamma talks, and our Sangha discussion is the 5th of 5 talks this week on the Anapanasati Sutta. Often during the Buddha’s time, and continuing today, “Buddhist” teachers promoting dharmas lacking this context and a personal understanding of the Buddha’s direct teachings freely dismiss much of the Buddha’s teachings essential to context and developing understanding. Lacking understanding, one cannot teach understanding. Ignoring the Buddha’s teachings to promote individual or culturally influenced views is another contributing cause of stress and disappointment – Dukkha: Continuing ignorance of Four Noble Truths.

The Culavedalla Sutta is a teaching presented by the nun Dhammadinna to her former husband, also a member of the original Sangha. The Buddha praised Dhammadinna as one of the most knowledgeable nuns of the Sangha. This is another example of the importance of women in the early monastic tradition of the Buddha's sangha. My Tuesday Dhamma talk and our Sangha discussion will be on the Sallatha and Bahiya Suttas.
In the Sallatha Sutta, the Buddha uses the metaphor of being struck twice by arrows – once by common circumstance and again by grasping-after desire. It is by personalizing the common worldly circumstance of stress and disappointment by reaction rooted in ignorance of Four Noble Truths that the second arrow of desire brings additional pain and obsession.
Bahiya Sutta shows that Bahiya was skillful to understand the immediacy of needing to awaken through the Dhamma. No one can know when sickness, aging and death will arise and this is why the Buddha gave these final instructions moments before he himself passed:
“Impermanence and decay are relentless. Strive diligently for your own salvation.”

My Saturday Dhamma talk and our Sangha discussion will be on the Girimananda Sutta.
The Girimananda Sutta is a profound and complete teaching on Three Marks Of Existence. With an initial focus on impermanence, the Buddha then relates underlying conditions that arise from self-identification with ordinary and impermanent phenomena and the stress, distractions, and ongoing disappointment that follows from misunderstanding these Three Marks.

My Tuesday Dhamma talk and our Sangha discussion will be on the Sambodhi Sutta.
The Sambodhi Sutta teaches the very specific “vipassana” or insight that the Buddha teaches. It is insight into Three Marks Of Existence. These three “marks” or common human characteristics define a person’s life when their minds are rooted in ignorance of Four Noble Truths.

My Saturday Dhamma talk and our Sangha discussion will be on the Jhana Sutta.
Jhana meditation is not another opportunity for fabricating experience through continued confusion or continued desire encouraged by misguided instruction. The four levels of Jhana are impermanent and are taught by the Buddha to provide a skillful means to notice ever-increasing levels of meditative absorption/concentration.
Please Join Us. Peace.

My Tuesday Dhamma talk and our Sangha discussion will be on the Sariputta Sutta.
In the Sariputta Sutta, Sariputta is questioned by Ananda, the Buddha’s cousin, and attendant. Ananda is confused about a fundamental aspect of the Dhamma. Ananda’s confusion is common and shows the importance of relying on those that have had the direct experience of developing the authentic Dhamma to very subtle and profound levels of understanding.

Prior to Tuesday’s Dhamma Class, David Allen will be formally acknowledged as a Becoming Buddha Cross River Meditation Center Dhamma Teacher.
Tuesday True Vipassana, True Introspective Insight into the Three Marks of Human Existence - Class 21 of 32:
Atthakanagara Sutta
David’s Tuesday Dhamma talk and our Sangha discussion will be on the Atthakanagara Sutta. When seen in the over-arching context of the Buddha’s Dhamma and in the context of engaging in Jhana meditation solely for deepening concentration, grasping after self-establishment in imaginary and fabricated mind-states is seen clearly as intentional distraction used to continue to ignore ignorance of Four Noble Truths.
