Waste-Water Pool Jambali Sutta - Jhana October 2 2018
Tuesday Oct 02, 2018
Tuesday Oct 02, 2018
This is a live stream and recording of our Tuesday evening Dhamma class from Cross River Meditation Center in Frenchtown, New Jersey on October 2, 2018. The stream begins every Tuesday at 7:15 PM Eastern US time.
My Tuesday Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion will be the second in a series on the meaning of Jhana - levels of meditative absorption. Tuesday's talk is on the Jambali Sutta. The Jambali Sutta is another sutta on the proper use of meditation - to engage with Shamatha-Vipassana [1] meditation to increase concentration. Jhana means meditative absorption and, though not in a practical sense strictly defined, each of the four levels of meditative absorption, or deepening concentration, can be, and should be mindfully observed.
“Their minds are enraptured with release from ignorance. They do grow confident and steadfast and well-established in the breaching of ignorance. For them, the final cessation of self-identification can be expected.” (Jambali Sutta)

My Saturday Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion is the first in a series of talks on the meaning of Jhana. This talk will be on the Samadhi Sutta which shows the proper use of Shamatha-Vipassana meditation practice within the broader framework of the Eightfold Path.
“How does the development of concentration lead to peace and calm here and now? When properly engaged in Shamatha-Vipassana meditation one is withdrawn from sensuality and unskillful mental qualities. They enter and remain in the first jhana, delight and pleasure born of withdrawal and accompanied by focused thought and insight. (Samadhi Sutta)

Seven Factors Of Awakening September 25 2018
Tuesday Sep 25, 2018
Tuesday Sep 25, 2018
This is a live stream and recording of our Tuesday evening Dhamma class from Cross River Meditation Center in Frenchtown, New Jersey on September 25, 2018. The stream begins every Tuesday at 7:15 PM Eastern US time.
My Tuesday Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion will be on the Gilana Sutta. There are seven factors of enlightenment taught by the Buddha that are to be cultivated and developed further for awakening to be realized. In the Gilana Sutta, the Buddha teaches Sariputta’s brother Cunda these seven factors.
“These seven factors of enlightenment are carefully taught by the Buddha and all seven are cultivated and fully developed by one awakened. These seven factors of enlightenment bring perfect understanding, full realization, and Nibbana.” (Gilana Sutta)

Fall 2018 Retreat Session 1: Introduction, Ngara and Loka Suttas
Monday Sep 24, 2018
Monday Sep 24, 2018
This is a recording of the first session from our Becoming Buddha Foundations Of Mindfulness And Meditation Fall 2018 Retreat at Won Dharma Center on September 20, 2018.
This talk includes my introduction to our reatet including an outline of the most skillful use of time spent on retreat. Retreats based on a clear understanding of the scope and purpose of the Buddha’s Dhamma avoid the extreme view that would result in denial of the senses necessary for skillful mindfulness such as the common practice of forced silence which leaves no opportunity learn or to engage directly in the Eightfold Path.
Retreat is a time to disentangle from worldly events through the investigation and integration of the Eightfold Path. One of the Seven Factors of Awakening is investigation of the Dhamma as taught in the Satipatthana and Anapanasati Suttas, and many others. Forced silence is not a factor of awakening for obvious reasons.
Direct investigation of the Buddha’s Dhamma first requires listening to the Dhamma from a teacher who has actually studied the Dhamma as preserved in the Sutta Pitaka, the second book of the Pali Canon. This teacher would then avoid adapting, accommodating, or embellishing the Dhamma from their knowledge gained from studying and integrating the Dhamma. Once the Dhamma is heard then it becomes possible integrate what is learned through the use of the Six-Sense Base generating the immediate visceral experience of the Dhamma during retreat.
By engaging in any extreme practice such as forced silence there is no opportunity for direct investigation of the Dhamma. Integrating the Buddha’s Dhamma requires the actual experience of mindfully engaging in all factors of the Dhamma through the use of the Six-Sense Base.
My talks and our Sangha discussions are on the Nagara Sutta and the Loka Sutta. In the Nagara Sutta the Buddha's tells of his awakening experience and the clear path for all to awaken. The Loka Sutta describes his view of the condition of the world, then and now, and what must be done to “leave the world behind.”

Fall 2018 Retreat Session 3 Satipatthana Sutta
Monday Sep 24, 2018
Monday Sep 24, 2018
This is a recording of the third session from our Becoming Buddha Foundations Of Mindfulness And Meditation Fall 2018 Retreat at Won Dharma Center on September 21, 2018.
My talk and our Sangha discussion is on the Satipatthana Sutta, the primary sutta on establishing mindfulness of what is occurring first on our meditation cushions, and then applying mindfulness to the entire Dhamma. This is the appropriate use of mindfulness as the Buddha taught mindfulness. As an introduction to the Satipatthana Sutta, I give a brief talk on the Bahiya Sutta where the Buddha teaches an impatient Bahiya the proper application of the refined mindfulness that develops from practicing the Buddha’s Dhamma.

Fall 2018 Retreat Session 4 Anapanasati Sutta
Monday Sep 24, 2018
Monday Sep 24, 2018
This is a recording of the fourth session from our Becoming Buddha Foundations Of Mindfulness And Meditation Fall 2018 Retreat at Won Dharma Center on September 21, 2018.
My talk and our Sangha discussion is on the Anapanasati Sutta. In this sutta the Buddha's uses the example of senior teaching monks to show how to apply meditation and mindfulness to a complete Dhamma practice. The Anapanasati is not instruction for meditation. It is instruction on what an informed Dhamma teacher teaches and what they avoid. The mindfulness of a Buddha is to be mindful of what is present and, as important, what is not present. This sutta is a description of how to incorporate meditation and mindfulness within an authentic Dhamma practice. By maintaining the focus presented here one avoids the frivolous embellishments to meditation and mindfulness that has developed since the Buddha’s passing.

Fall 2018 Retreat Session 5 Four Noble Truths and Not-Self
Monday Sep 24, 2018
Monday Sep 24, 2018
This is a recording of the fifth session from our Becoming Buddha Foundations Of Mindfulness and Meditation Fall Retreat at Won Dharma Center on September 22, 2018.
My talks and our Sangha discussions are on the Dhammacakkappavattana and Anatta-Lakkhana Suttas. The Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta is the Buddha's very first teaching where he established developing profound understanding of Four Noble Truths as the context and purpose of his Dhamma.
Everything the Buddha would teach during his forty-five year teaching career was taught in the context of The Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta and informed by the Paticcasamuppada Sutta, the primary sutta on Dependent Origination.
The Anatta-Lakkhana Sutta is the second teaching of an awakened human being where the Buddha teaches how to recognize and abandon “selfing” or “I-making” as the ultimate goal of the Dhamma - to empty oneself of self-referential wrong views rooted in ignorance of Four Noble Truths. These first two suttas referred to here and the following Fire Discourse are considered the “Cardinal” discourses or the three most primary and important sutras and the singular focus of insight - Vipassana - gaining insight into Three Marks of Existence. It can be seen that Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta speaks to Impermanence and ending all wrong views and the Anatta-Lakkhana Sutta explains how self-referential views arise in ignorance of Four Noble truths which forms the basis for developing attachments to impermanent objects, events, views, and ideas. The following discourse, the Fire Discourse speaks to the third mark of existence of Dukkha arising from the passion for continued self-establishment.

Fall 2018 Retreat Session 6 Dukkha - Fie Discourse
Monday Sep 24, 2018
Monday Sep 24, 2018
This is a recording of the sixth session from our Becoming Buddha Foundations Of Mindfulness and Meditation Spring Retreat at Won Dharma Center on September 22, 2018.
My talk and our Sangha discussion is on the the Fire Discourse and the Mgga-Vibhanga Suttas. The Fire Discourse uses the example of fire-worshippers, a common cult of the time, to teach how the flames of passion arise from ignorance of Four Noble Truths resulting in ongoing confusion, deluded thinking, and suffering. It is the preoccupation with Dukkha that provides the intentional distraction necessary to continue to ignore ignorance. When seen in the context of Dependent Origination and Four Noble Truths it becomes clear that it is the preoccupation with Dukkha that has obscured the Buddha’s Dhamma and allowed for the many contradictions to the authentic Dhamma prevalent in Modern Buddhism.
The Magga-Vibhanga Sutta is the Buddha's thorough analysis of the Eightfold Path leaving no ambiguity as to the singular path he taught, and why.

Fall 2018 Retreat Session 7 Kcayanagotta and Bhaddekaratta Suttas
Monday Sep 24, 2018
Monday Sep 24, 2018
This is a recording of the seventh and concluding session from our Becoming Buddha Foundations Of Mindfulness and Meditation Spring Retreat at Won Dharma Center on September 23, 2018.
My talks and our Sangha discussions are on the the Kaccayanagotta Sutta and the Bhaddekaratta Sutta. The Kaccayanagotta Sutta is a concise teaching on profound Right View and Dependent Origination. The Kaccayanagotta Sutta teaches the ultimate understanding of Refined Mindfulness - to be mindful of what is present and, as importantly, what is no longer present.
The Bhaddekaratta Sutta concludes our retreat with a teaching on establishing refined mindfulness and recognizing that each each day of authentic Dhamma practice is an auspicious day.

This is a live stream and recording of our Tuesday evening Dhamma class from Cross River Meditation Center in Frenchtown, New Jersey on September 18, 2018. The stream begins every Tuesday at 7:15 PM Eastern US time.
My Tuesday Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion will be on the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta. The Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta is the very first teaching ever presented by the Buddha. It occurred a few weeks after Siddhartha Gotama awakened and gained full human maturity - complete understanding of the human life experience.
“This is the middle way realized by the Tathagata that brings vision and direct knowledge, that leads to calm and to self-awakening and Unbinding..” (Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta)

This is a live stream and recording of our Saturday morning Dhamma class from Cross River Meditation Center in Frenchtown, New Jersey on September 15, 2018. The stream begins every Saturday at 8:30 AM Eastern US time.
My Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion will be on the Yasa Sutta. The Yasa Sutta shows the importance of dismissing praise, even in very subtle ways, for developing the Dhamma. It also shows how seeking external validation for Dhamma practice will lead to further distraction and confusion
“Nagita, then there are those well-established in seclusion who receives food, clothes, shelter, and recognition from a group. Knowing the benefit of seclusion and restraint no disturbance will arise in them. .” (Yasa Sutta)

My Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion is on the Arahant Sutta. The Arahant Sutta is an article on a very succinct teaching where the Buddha describes awakening, or full human maturity, that is remarkable in its simplicity and straightforwardness:
“And when one has seen the five clinging-aggregates as they really are, the arising and the passing away, understanding the attraction and the distraction,.. (Arahant Sutta)

This is a live stream and recording of our Tuesday evening Dhamma class from Cross River Meditation Center in Frenchtown, New Jersey on September 11, 2018. The stream begins every Tuesday at 7:15 PM Eastern US time.
My Tuesday Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion will be on the Bhaddekaratta Sutta. The Bhaddekaratta Sutta teaches the importance of being mindfully present of life as life unfolds. Everything the Buddha taught during his forty-five-year teaching career was taught in the context of developing understanding of Four Noble Truths and release from clinging to self-referential views rooted in ignorance of these four truths.
“To develop an auspicious day remain present with your life as your life occurs. Do not chase the past or project your thoughts to the future. Remain free of entanglements with the world and mindful of what is occurring. Be mindful of impermanence and uncertainty. Those that do so will have an auspicious day. My Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion will be on the Agantuka Sutta. In the Agantuka Sutta, the Buddha uses the metaphor of a common residence to show that the Eightfold Path is a true refuge for anyone seeking to develop the profound understanding of the nature of stress and suffering, gain insight into There Marks Of Existence, and abandon all views rooted in ignorance of Four Noble Truths.
“In this way, anyone who cultivates and methodically practices the Noble Eightfold Path will, with direct knowledge and profound wisdom, comprehend phenomena to be comprehended, abandon phenomena to be abandoned, experience phenomena to be experienced, and develop phenomena to be developed.” (Agantuka Sutta)

My Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion will be on the Vitakkasanthana Sutta. In this sutta, the Buddha teaches that the refined mindfulness developed through the Eightfold Path brings a relaxed and peaceful quality of mind.
“… this is a person with mastery of thought sequences. This person thinks what they want whenever they want and does not think what is unskillful. This practitioner has severed craving and has brought an end to suffering and stress.” (Vitakkasanthana Sutta)

This is my Wednesday Dhamma talk posted by noon on the direct teachings of the Buddha as preserved in the Sutta Pitaka, the second book of the Pali Canon. These talks will be posted by noon Eastern US time.
My Wednesday Dhamma talk will be on a poem from the Therigatha. In this poem Sona comes to the Dhamma late in life and quickly develops profound understanding of key elements of the Dhamma including Five Clinging Aggregates, Three Marks Of Existence, restraint at the Six-Sense-Base, meditative absorption, and a penetrative understanding of Four Noble Truths.

Nagara Sutta Siddartha Describes His Awakening August 28 2018

Tuesday Aug 28, 2018
This is a live stream and recording of our Tuesday evening Dhamma class from Cross River Meditation Center in Frenchtown, New Jersey on August 28, 2018. The stream begins every Tuesday at 7:15 PM Eastern US time.
My Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion will be on the Nagara Sutta. The Nagara Sutta is remarkable in its simplicity in describing Dependent Origination in a practically applied way. In this sutta the Buddha clearly shows how ignorance of Four Noble Truths and of The Three Marks of existence “originates” the process that all manner of disappointment, unsatisfactoriness, distraction, and suffering - in a word Dukkha - is “dependent” on.
“Monks, prior to my awakening, when I was an unawakened Bodhisatta, I thought I could continue to divide my thinking. I continued thinking intended on sensuality, ill will and harmfulness and thinking intended on renunciation, good will and harmlessness.”

This is a live stream and recording of our Saturday morning Dhamma class from Cross River Meditation Center in Frenchtown, New Jersey on August 25, 2018. The stream begins every Saturday at 8:30 AM Eastern US time.
My Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion will be on the Kummu Sutta. The Kummu Sutta uses metaphor to show how the Dhamma is a protection against the mindlessness that arises from unrestrained desire and the peace and happiness that develops directly through restraint.
“Just as a jackal hovers around hoping for a meal, Mara hovers continuously hoping to create confusion, delusion, and disappointment by contact with the eye, or the ear, or the nose, or the tongue, or the body, or through the intellect.” (Kumu Sutta)

This is a live stream and recording of our Tuesday evening Dhamma class from Cross River Meditation Center in Frenchtown, New Jersey on August 21, 2018. The stream begins every Tuesday at 7:15 PM Eastern US time.
My Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion will be on the Bhikkhuvaga Sutta. In the Bhikkhuvaga Sutta, the Buddha teaches the importance to develop the virtuous factors of the Eightfold Path of Right Speech, Right Action, and Right Livelihood to recognize and abandon unskillful thoughts, words, and deeds. The concentration developed through Shamatha-Vipassana meditation supports the refined mindfulness that brings the ability to guard the six-sense base.
“Skillful is restraint at the body, skillful is restraint is speech, skillful is restraint in thought. Restraint in all experiences is skillful. One restrained in the world is free from confusion, delusion, and disappointment.” (Bhikkhuvaga Sutta)

This is a live stream and recording of our Saturday morning Dhamma class from Cross River Meditation Center in Frenchtown, New Jersey on August 18, 2018. The stream begins every Saturday at 8:30 AM Eastern US time.
My Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion will be on the Sundari Sutta. The Sundari Sutta teaches the unending peace gained through developing the Eightfold Path. This sutta is a perfect example of the timelessness of the Buddha’s Dhamma. This sutta and mindful restraint are particularly relevant in our ever-increasing divisive political and social climate. Refraining from reaction or striking back at injustice directly is shown to very quickly diffuse conflict while preserving a calm and peaceful mind.
“One always suffer in ignorance
who lie about events
As does the one who claims innocence
when guilty.
These are acting without skill
and suffer in this life and beyond.”

This is a live stream and recording of our Tuesday evening Dhamma class from Cross River Meditation Center in Frenchtown, New Jersey on August 14, 2018. The stream begins every Tuesday at 7:15 PM Eastern US time.
My Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion will be on the Pamadaviharin Sutta. In this sutta, the Buddha teaches the importance of developing dwelling in refined mindfulness. Modern life encourages constant engagement with the world and in many subtle ways discourages restraint. Many today feel overwhelmed by the demands of life and the busy-ness of their lives.
“And how does one dwell in mindfulness? When a Dhamma Practitioner dwells in restraint with eye, with nose, with the ear, with the tongue, and with the body, the mind is not agitated or distracted by mental fabrications.” (Pamadaviharin Sutta)

My Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion will be on the Dhammannu Sutta. Similar to last Saturday’s talk on the Dhamma-Viharin Sutta, in the Dhammannu Sutta the Buddha teaches what it means to be “one with a sense of the Dhamma.”
“A disciple who is one with a sense of the distinctions of individuals disapproves of those that do not practice the true Dhamma in accordance with the Dhamma and they praise are those that do practice the true Dhamma in accordance with the Dhamma, who themselves have a sense of the Dhamma and a sense of the meaning of the Dhamma.” (Dhammannu Sutta)

My Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion will be on the Dhamma-Viharin Sutta. In the Dhamma-Viharin Sutta, the Buddha is teaching that engaging with the Dhamma through intellectual study alone will not develop cessation of craving after and clinging to views ignorant of Four Noble Truths, and the confusion and suffering that follows. ”
“Whatever a teacher should do out of sympathy for you and seeking your welfare, I have done for you. Over there are roots of trees and empty dwellings. Don’t be mindless, don’t fall into regret. Practice Right Meditation and develop meditative absorption. “ (Dhamma-Viharin Sutta)

This is my Wednesday Dhamma talk posted by noon on the direct teachings of the Buddha as preserved in the Sutta Pitaka, the second book of the Pali Canon. These talks will be posted by noon Eastern US time.
My Wednesday Dhamma talk will be on the Nidana Sutta. In the Nidana Sutta, the Buddha focuses on recognizing and abandoning the Three Defilements of greed, aversion, and deluded thinking. All three of the defilements are rooted in ignorance of Four Noble Truths and the resulting ongoing self-referential “I-making.”
“One who has developed wisdom and ended ignorance, this individual abandons greed, aversion, and delusion, and experiences Clear Understanding and lasting peace and happiness.” (Nidana Sutta)

This is a live stream and recording of our Saturday morning Dhamma class from Cross River Meditation Center in Frenchtown, New Jersey on July 28, 2018. The stream begins every Saturday at 8:30 AM Eastern US time.
My Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion will be on the Phena Sutta. The Phena Sutta is another sutta on emptiness as the Buddha uses the term. In this sutta he teaches the emptiness of The Five Clinging Aggregates and the emptiness of creating self-identities by clinging to fleeting objects, events, views and ideas.
"Disenchanted they grow dispassionate. Through dispassion they are released. With release there is the knowledge that they are released (from clinging to ignorant views). They know that birth is ended, the fully integrated life has been lived, and the path complete. They know here will be no more moments rooted in ignorance." (Phena Sutta)

And whatever there is that arises in dependence on contact at the eye - experienced as pleasure, pain or neither-pleasure-nor-pain - that too is aflame.” (Fire Discourse)
