My Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion will be on the Agantuka Sutta. In the Agantuka Sutta, the Buddha uses the metaphor of a common residence to show that the Eightfold Path is a true refuge for anyone seeking to develop the profound understanding of the nature of stress and suffering, gain insight into There Marks Of Existence, and abandon all views rooted in ignorance of Four Noble Truths.
“In this way, anyone who cultivates and methodically practices the Noble Eightfold Path will, with direct knowledge and profound wisdom, comprehend phenomena to be comprehended, abandon phenomena to be abandoned, experience phenomena to be experienced, and develop phenomena to be developed.” (Agantuka Sutta)

My Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion will be on the Vitakkasanthana Sutta. In this sutta, the Buddha teaches that the refined mindfulness developed through the Eightfold Path brings a relaxed and peaceful quality of mind.
“… this is a person with mastery of thought sequences. This person thinks what they want whenever they want and does not think what is unskillful. This practitioner has severed craving and has brought an end to suffering and stress.” (Vitakkasanthana Sutta)

Wednesday Aug 29, 2018
This is my Wednesday Dhamma talk posted by noon on the direct teachings of the Buddha as preserved in the Sutta Pitaka, the second book of the Pali Canon. These talks will be posted by noon Eastern US time.
My Wednesday Dhamma talk will be on a poem from the Therigatha. In this poem Sona comes to the Dhamma late in life and quickly develops profound understanding of key elements of the Dhamma including Five Clinging Aggregates, Three Marks Of Existence, restraint at the Six-Sense-Base, meditative absorption, and a penetrative understanding of Four Noble Truths.

Nagara Sutta Siddartha Describes His Awakening August 28 2018
Tuesday Aug 28, 2018
Tuesday Aug 28, 2018
This is a live stream and recording of our Tuesday evening Dhamma class from Cross River Meditation Center in Frenchtown, New Jersey on August 28, 2018. The stream begins every Tuesday at 7:15 PM Eastern US time.
My Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion will be on the Nagara Sutta. The Nagara Sutta is remarkable in its simplicity in describing Dependent Origination in a practically applied way. In this sutta the Buddha clearly shows how ignorance of Four Noble Truths and of The Three Marks of existence “originates” the process that all manner of disappointment, unsatisfactoriness, distraction, and suffering - in a word Dukkha - is “dependent” on.
“Monks, prior to my awakening, when I was an unawakened Bodhisatta, I thought I could continue to divide my thinking. I continued thinking intended on sensuality, ill will and harmfulness and thinking intended on renunciation, good will and harmlessness.”

This is a live stream and recording of our Saturday morning Dhamma class from Cross River Meditation Center in Frenchtown, New Jersey on August 25, 2018. The stream begins every Saturday at 8:30 AM Eastern US time.
My Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion will be on the Kummu Sutta. The Kummu Sutta uses metaphor to show how the Dhamma is a protection against the mindlessness that arises from unrestrained desire and the peace and happiness that develops directly through restraint.
“Just as a jackal hovers around hoping for a meal, Mara hovers continuously hoping to create confusion, delusion, and disappointment by contact with the eye, or the ear, or the nose, or the tongue, or the body, or through the intellect.” (Kumu Sutta)

Tuesday Aug 21, 2018
This is a live stream and recording of our Tuesday evening Dhamma class from Cross River Meditation Center in Frenchtown, New Jersey on August 21, 2018. The stream begins every Tuesday at 7:15 PM Eastern US time.
My Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion will be on the Bhikkhuvaga Sutta. In the Bhikkhuvaga Sutta, the Buddha teaches the importance to develop the virtuous factors of the Eightfold Path of Right Speech, Right Action, and Right Livelihood to recognize and abandon unskillful thoughts, words, and deeds. The concentration developed through Shamatha-Vipassana meditation supports the refined mindfulness that brings the ability to guard the six-sense base.
“Skillful is restraint at the body, skillful is restraint is speech, skillful is restraint in thought. Restraint in all experiences is skillful. One restrained in the world is free from confusion, delusion, and disappointment.” (Bhikkhuvaga Sutta)

Sundari Sutta Restraint An End To All Conflict August 18 2018

This is a live stream and recording of our Saturday morning Dhamma class from Cross River Meditation Center in Frenchtown, New Jersey on August 18, 2018. The stream begins every Saturday at 8:30 AM Eastern US time.
My Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion will be on the Sundari Sutta. The Sundari Sutta teaches the unending peace gained through developing the Eightfold Path. This sutta is a perfect example of the timelessness of the Buddha’s Dhamma. This sutta and mindful restraint are particularly relevant in our ever-increasing divisive political and social climate. Refraining from reaction or striking back at injustice directly is shown to very quickly diffuse conflict while preserving a calm and peaceful mind.
“One always suffer in ignorance
who lie about events
As does the one who claims innocence
when guilty.
These are acting without skill
and suffer in this life and beyond.”

This is a live stream and recording of our Tuesday evening Dhamma class from Cross River Meditation Center in Frenchtown, New Jersey on August 14, 2018. The stream begins every Tuesday at 7:15 PM Eastern US time.
My Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion will be on the Pamadaviharin Sutta. In this sutta, the Buddha teaches the importance of developing dwelling in refined mindfulness. Modern life encourages constant engagement with the world and in many subtle ways discourages restraint. Many today feel overwhelmed by the demands of life and the busy-ness of their lives.
“And how does one dwell in mindfulness? When a Dhamma Practitioner dwells in restraint with eye, with nose, with the ear, with the tongue, and with the body, the mind is not agitated or distracted by mental fabrications.” (Pamadaviharin Sutta)

This is a live stream and recording of our Tuesday evening Dhamma class from Cross River Meditation Center in Frenchtown, New Jersey on August 7, 2018. The stream begins every Tuesday at 7:15 PM Eastern US time.
My Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion will be on the Dhammannu Sutta. Similar to last Saturday’s talk on the Dhamma-Viharin Sutta, in the Dhammannu Sutta the Buddha teaches what it means to be “one with a sense of the Dhamma.”
“A disciple who is one with a sense of the distinctions of individuals disapproves of those that do not practice the true Dhamma in accordance with the Dhamma and they praise are those that do practice the true Dhamma in accordance with the Dhamma, who themselves have a sense of the Dhamma and a sense of the meaning of the Dhamma.” (Dhammannu Sutta)

My Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion will be on the Dhamma-Viharin Sutta. In the Dhamma-Viharin Sutta, the Buddha is teaching that engaging with the Dhamma through intellectual study alone will not develop cessation of craving after and clinging to views ignorant of Four Noble Truths, and the confusion and suffering that follows. ”
“Whatever a teacher should do out of sympathy for you and seeking your welfare, I have done for you. Over there are roots of trees and empty dwellings. Don’t be mindless, don’t fall into regret. Practice Right Meditation and develop meditative absorption. “ (Dhamma-Viharin Sutta)

Nidana Sutta Ending The Defilements August 1 2018
Wednesday Aug 01, 2018
Wednesday Aug 01, 2018
This is my Wednesday Dhamma talk posted by noon on the direct teachings of the Buddha as preserved in the Sutta Pitaka, the second book of the Pali Canon. These talks will be posted by noon Eastern US time.
My Wednesday Dhamma talk will be on the Nidana Sutta. In the Nidana Sutta, the Buddha focuses on recognizing and abandoning the Three Defilements of greed, aversion, and deluded thinking. All three of the defilements are rooted in ignorance of Four Noble Truths and the resulting ongoing self-referential “I-making.”
“One who has developed wisdom and ended ignorance, this individual abandons greed, aversion, and delusion, and experiences Clear Understanding and lasting peace and happiness.” (Nidana Sutta)

My Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion will be on the Upaddha Sutta. In the Upaddha Sutta the Buddha emphasizes a common theme present throughout his Dhamma. When the context and purpose of the Buddha’s Dhamma is understood, it can clearly be seen that who and what one associates with will determine their life’s experience.
“Admirable friendship, admirable companionship, and admirable camaraderie, is the whole of a Dhamma practitioner’s life.” (Upaddha Sutta)

Phena Sutta Emptiness Of Five Clinging-Aggregates July 28 2018

This is a live stream and recording of our Saturday morning Dhamma class from Cross River Meditation Center in Frenchtown, New Jersey on July 28, 2018. The stream begins every Saturday at 8:30 AM Eastern US time.
My Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion will be on the Phena Sutta. The Phena Sutta is another sutta on emptiness as the Buddha uses the term. In this sutta he teaches the emptiness of The Five Clinging Aggregates and the emptiness of creating self-identities by clinging to fleeting objects, events, views and ideas.
"Disenchanted they grow dispassionate. Through dispassion they are released. With release there is the knowledge that they are released (from clinging to ignorant views). They know that birth is ended, the fully integrated life has been lived, and the path complete. They know here will be no more moments rooted in ignorance." (Phena Sutta)
