This is the eleventh week of our Saturday 2019 Truth Of Happiness Dhamma Study. My Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion is on the Girimananda Sutta. The Girimananda Sutta is a profound and complete teaching on Three Marks Of Existence. With an initial focus on impermanence, the Buddha then relates underlying conditions that arise from self-identification with ordinary and impermanent phenomena and the stress, distractions, and ongoing disappointment that follows from misunderstanding these Three Marks.
“Ananda, if you would go to Girimananda and tell him of the Ten Understandings it is possible that upon hearing your words his distress will be relieved.” (Girimananda Sutta)

This is the eighth week of our Saturday 2019 Truth Of Happiness Dhamma Study. My Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion is on the Agantuka Sutta. In the Agantuka Sutta, the Buddha uses the metaphor of a common residence to show that the Eightfold Path is a true refuge for anyone seeking to develop the profound understanding of the nature of stress and suffering, gain insight into There Marks Of Existence, and abandon all views rooted in ignorance of Four Noble Truths.
“Anyone who develops Right View dependent on seclusion and on dispassion and on cessation (of ignorance) that results in release (from wrong views). Through direct knowledge and profound wisdom, they develop Right Intention, Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood, Right Effort, Right Mindfulness, and Right Meditation that is dependent on seclusion, dependent on dispassion, dependent on cessation that results in release (from clinging to wrong views).” (Agantuka Sutta)

Guided Forty-Five-Minute Jhana Meditation
Friday Mar 01, 2019
Friday Mar 01, 2019
Jhana means concentration or non-distraction. Jhana is the word the Buddha used to describe the purpose and scope of meditation. When directing followers to meditate he would consistently say: “Find the root of a tree or an empty hut (establish physical seclusion) and do Jhana.”
Jhana refers to the single purpose of meditation – to develop profound concentration that can support the refined mindfulness necessary to integrate and develop the entire Eightfold Path. (Reference Yuganaddha Sutta and many others.)
Rather than encourage an unstructured hybrid meditation method, in the context of the Buddha’s Dhamma Jhana meditation supports true and useful vipassana. Vipassana refers to developing the very specific introspective insight into Three Marks Of Existence – Anicca, Anatta, and Dukkha. Here is an article on the meaning of vipassana in the context of the Buddha’s Dhamma:

As concentration increases the mind naturally calms providing the internal environment for true and useful introspective insight.

This is the fifth week of our Tuesday 2019 Truth Of Happiness Dhamma Study. My Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion is on the Four Noble Truths. The Dhammacakkappavattana sutta was the first teaching of the Buddha establishing Four Noble Truths as the context for his Dhamma.
“There are these two extremes that are not to be indulged in by one who has gone forth. Which two? That which is devoted to sensual pleasure with reference to sensual objects. This behavior is base, vulgar, common, ignoble, unprofitable. It is devoted to self-affliction. That which is devoted to self-affliction is (always) painful and ignoble. Avoiding both of these extremes the middle way is realized by the Tathagata. This middle way produces vision and knowledge. This middle way leads to calm, to direct knowledge, to self-awakening, to Unbinding..” (Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta)

This is the seventh week of our Saturday 2019 Truth Of Happiness Dhamma Study. My Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion is on the Culavedalla Sutta. The Culavedalla Sutta is a teaching presented by the nun Dhammadinna to her former husband, also a member of the original Sangha. The Buddha praised Dhammadinna as one of the most knowledgeable nuns of the Sangha.
“Visakha, the Buddha teaches that self-identification is established by clinging to form, by clinging to feeling, by clinging to perception, by clinging to fabrications, and by clinging to consciousness. These five clinging-aggregates are the self-identification taught by the Buddha.” (Culavedaqlla Sutta)

In the Satipatthana Sutta, the Buddha teaches the Four Foundations of Mindfulness as the framework for what occurs during meditation and as a reference for mindfulness in all areas of a Dhamma practitioner's moment-by-moment life.
“In this way one remains mindful of the Seven Factors of Awakening and the arising and the passing away of the Seven Factors of Awakening - independent of and not clinging to anything in the world. My Thursday Dhamma talk, streamed live at 7:15 pm Eastern US Time, will be from the Dhammapada. The seventh chapter of the Dhammapada is the Buddha’s description of an arahant. An arahant is a person who has developed a profound level of concentration. From a well-concentrated mind, a mind resting in Jhana, a person is able to integrate the Eightfold Path as the framework for developing profound wisdom and true compassion and has recognized and abandoned greed, aversion, and deluded thinking.
“The wise, the Arahant, like the earth itself, resents nothing, is resolute as a stone pillar in the Dhamma, their mind pure, concentrated, refined, is free of all worldly entanglements.” (Dhammapada 7)

This is the second week of our 2019 Truth Of Happiness Dhamma Study. My Tuesday Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion is on establishing Shamatha-Vipassana meditation as the Buddha taught meditation. The Buddha taught Shamatha-Vipassana meditation for the sole purpose of developing Jhana. Jhana means concentration. It is a well-concentrated mind that is able to support the refined mindfulness necessary to integrate the Eightfold Path as the framework for Dhamma practice.
This week’s Dhamma talk is on the Anupada Sutta. Here the Buddha uses Sariupuutta as an example of developingRight Meditation and profound concentration (Jhana) to end fabricated views one after another. A well-concentrated mind is necessary to recognize and abandon all fabricated views and develop a calm and peaceful mins.
“He noticed how these qualities arose, came into play, and vanished. Sariputta remained free of attraction or aversion in regard to these qualities. He remained independent, detached, released, dissociated, and free of any barriers arising from attraction or aversion.” (Anupada Sutta)

“"Disenchanted they grow dispassionate. Through dispassion they are released. With release there is the knowledge that they are released (from clinging to ignorant views). They know that birth is ended, the fully integrated life has been lived, and the path complete. They know here will be no more moments rooted in ignorance." (Phena Sutta)

My Saturday Dhamma talk and our sangha discussion will be will be the first of two talks on the Dhatu-Vibhanaga Sutta. This sutta shows the Buddha’s view on the complete and impersonal ordinariness of human life. The objects of life that are constantly personalized though self-identification are shown to be common, fleeting, and having no substance worth self-identification.
“This Dhamma practitioner understands where the currents of speculation and supposition do not flow. When, through wise restraint, the currents of speculation and supposition do not flow, this one is known as ‘a sage at peace.’ (Dhatu-Vibhanaga Sutta)
